Here are two lovely pieces by William LLoyd Webber, father of Andrew and Julian which are really English in outlook. Mulberry Cottage is gentle with lush harmony and a beautiful flowing flute line. The more substantial Sonatina has a joyous first movement and an enigmatic feel to the second movement created by the contrast between slow and fast. It’s simply lovely music!

While his Sonatina for Viola and Piano is better-known, this Sonatina for Flute and Piano is equally charming. Here it has been paired with another of his works for flute and piano, Mulberry Cottage. This piece was inspired by a holiday home the Lloyd-Webber family hired, and the inspiration of the countryside is clearly heard.
